As part of the Port Authority’s Energy Savings Performance Guarantee Program, more than 13,000 World Trade Center fixtures are slated to be swapped out with high-efficiency versions.

Within the first year of lighting upgrades, the World Trade Center may save more than $750,000 by switching to more energy-efficient fixtures. Also, these lighting upgrades are estimated to save about 6.4 million kilowatt hours of electricity and reduce carbon emissions by more than 4,700 metric tons each year. That reduction of carbon emission is the equivalent of removing more than 1,000 passenger vehicles from the road, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates.

New, longer-lasting LED lights will be installed in the Vehicle Security Center, Central Chiller Plant, PATH fare and platform area, Transportation Hub and other World Trade Center office spaces.

“These improvements will enhance public spaces with improved light quality and state-of-the-art features that will accentuate the stunning architecture at the World Trade Center,” says Christine Weydig, the Port Authority’s Director of Office of Environmental and Energy Programs. “In addition to contributing to a world-class experience for our visitors, this project will further the Port Authority’s sustainability commitments.”

Scheduled for completion by the end of 2019, the project also includes replacing the lighting in the World Trade Center Oculus with modifications that will allow easy color changes of the light within the 800,000 square-foot facility.

The Port Authority’s Energy Savings Performance Guarantee Program helps identify, develop and implement energy efficiency and clean energy opportunities to reduce the Port Authority’s greenhouse gas emissions.
